A fine Waterloo Medal 1815, fitted with a replaced suspension, awarded to Corporal Henry Atkinson, 2nd Battalion, 73rd Perthshire Regiment of Foot, who originally served with the Durham Fencibles from 1799 to 1803, and at Waterloo on 18th June 1815, served with the No.6 Grenadier Company, his regiment suffering heavy losses, when part of Halketts 5th British Brigade in Altens 3rd Division. Waterloo Medal 1815, fitted with a replaced suspension; (CORP. HENRY ATKINSON, 2ND BATT. 73RD REG. FOOT.) Henry Atkinson was originally a serving member of the local fencibles during the war with France, and as such served in the Durham Fencibles from 1st November 1799 to 28th February 1803, before being discharged. Atkinson then enlisted into the British Army on 15th May 1811, joining as a Private the 2nd Battalion, 73rd Perthshire Regiment of Foot, he was promoted to Corporal on 25th June 1813, and was then present at the battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815 with the No.6 Grenadier Company of his Battalion. At the Battle of Waterloo, the 73rd Perthshire Regiment of Foot suffered heavy casualties, with 336 officers and men being killed, wounded or missing out of a strength of 563 men when forming part of Major General Sir Colin Halketts 5th British Brigade in Lieutenant General Sir Charles Altens 3rd Division.
