FUS: 1873-4) Uriah Cousins saw service as a Drummer (No.1541) with the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Regiment of Foot - the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and was on service as Chatham as of 1871, and then out on service in West Africa at the Gold Coast during the Ashantee War of 1873 to 1874, and was present in the battle of Amoaful on 31st January 1874 and then the capture of Coomassie on 4th February 1874. This relatively short war was fought against fierce foe under extremely trying circumstances, and casualties were high. Out of the 607 medals awarded to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Foot for the conflict, less than half, 302 men in all, received the medal with the clasp for actions including the battle of Amoaful and the entry into Coomassie. minor edge bruising, Very Fine.
