Great War 1914 and Western Front June 1918 Steam Company Army Meritorious Service Medal group awarded to Temporary Staff Sergeant E. Wells, Army Service Corps, who was a Reservist who then saw service out on the Western Front form 15th August 1914 with the Advanced Mechanical Transport Depot. It was however for his services as a Private and Acting Mechanical Staff Sergeant with the 9th Auxiliary Steam Company that he was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal in the London Gazette for 17th June 1918. This unit utilised steam tractors to haul supplies for the troops and it is relatively scarce to find awards to this form of unit.

Edwin Wells was born in Gillingham, Kent, and having worked as a fitter, then attested for service with the British Army at Chatham on 18th May 1905, joining as a Private (No.23129) the Army Service Corps. Wells then transferred to the Army Reserve on 1st May 1908. However with the outbreak of the Great War he was mobilised from the Reserve at Aldershot on 5th August 1914, and then saw service out on the Western Front from 15th August 1914 with the Advanced Mechanical Transport Depot. Wells was serving as a Private and Acting Mechanical Staff Sergeant with the 9th Auxiliary Steam Company when he was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal in the London Gazette for 17th June 1918. This unit utilised steam tractors to haul supplies for the troops and it is relatively scarce to find awards to this form of unit. Subsequently promoted to Temporary Staff Sergeant, Wells was posted home in January 1919, and discharged on 17th February 1919. slight contact wear and polishing, Very fine
