India General Service Medal 1854-1895, 1 Clasp: Burma 1885-7, awarded to Major later Major General W.C. Black, Bombay Staff Corps, Indian Army, formerly Royal Artillery, who was commissioned in 1866, transferred to the Indian Army in 1871, and as a Major with the 23rd Bombay Light Infantry, saw service during the campaign in Burma at the time of the Third Burma War of 1885 to 1887. As of 1895 he was the commanding officer of the 1st Bombay Infantry, and was promoted to Major General on his retirement in January 1904. From January 1908 he was the Honorary Colonel of the 101st Grenadiers. India General Service Medal 1854, 1 Clasp: Burma 1885-7; (MAJOR W.C. BLACK. 23RD: BO. INFY:) William Campbell Black was first commissioned into the British Army from being a Gentleman Cadet to Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 12th January 1866, and then transferred to the Indian Army as a Lieutenant with the Bombay Staff Corps, this being notified in the London Gazette for 21st March 1871, with his seniority back dated to 12th January 1866. Promoted to Captain on 12th January 1878, and to Major on 12th January 1886, he saw service with the 23rd Bombay Light Infantry during the campaign in Burma at the time of the Third Burma War of 1885 to 1887. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 12th January 1892, as of 1895 he was the Commandant of the 1st Bombay Infantry. Black was promoted to Major General on his retirement on 12th January 1904. He was ultimately appointed Honorary Colonel of the 101st Grenadiers in the London Gazette for 28th January 1908. Confirmed as his only medal entitlement
