Description:
India General Service Medal 1854-1895, 1 Clasp, Hazara 1888 awarded to Private J.C. Dunlay, 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders who claims to have seen service out in India on the North West Frontier during the Black Mountain Expedition, including the action at Kohat. India General Service Medal 1854-1895, 1 Clasp: Hazara 1888; (1456 Pte. J.C. Dunlay 2d Bn Sea Highrs) John Dunlay was living in Grassmarket, Edinburgh and working as a general labourer when he attested into the Seaforth Highlanders at Edinburgh on 27th November 1914 aged 49 years and 153 days, noting 11 years previous service with the Seaforth Highlanders, he was quickly discharged on 11th January 1915 with his services being no longer required. This presumably as a result of being absent between 6th December 1914 and 22nd December 1914 when he was found at Inverness by the Civil Police. Dunlay had earlier seen service out in India on the North West Frontier during the Black Mountain Expedition, including the action at Kohat. These operations lasted from 3rd October to 9th November 1888, with the Hazara Field Force being commanded by Major General J.W. McQueen, C.B., A.D.C., and was fought against the Black Mountain tribes such as the Hassanzais, Akazais, and Chagarzais. There is no evidence of a man of this name being awarded the India General Service Medal 1854, clasp Hazara, a perhaps self-awarded medal. a small cut to the rim and the clasp, indicating a silver test, Good Very Fine
