Thomas Churchill was born in St. James, London, and having worked as a Labourer, enlisted at Westminster on 13thAugust 1866 and served as a Private (No. 1498) with the 4thBattalion, Rifle Brigade. Having initially served at home for 7 years and 67 days he had spent time in the cells by order of his Commanding Officer between 12thAugust and 18thAugust 1869 as a result of disobedience of orders, he would then be tried and imprisoned for being drunk on duty between 15thMarch and 11thApril 1871. Churchill moved to India on 21stOctober 1873 where he remained until 7thDecember 1887, re-engaging to complete 21 years on 10thJuly 1874.was present during the operations against the Jowaki Afridis which lasted from 9th November 1877 to 19th January 1878. The Jowakis Afridis who occupied the territory between Peshawar and the Kohat Pass, made continuous attacks on their neighbours. He was then present during the Second Afghanistan War being present in action at Ali Musjid on 21stNovember 1878. During the latter part of his career his conduct was good, being granted 5 good conduct badges on 17thSeptember 1887 shortly before his discharge on 27thDecember 1887.
