Pelling, 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, who was present in Palestine during the Arab Rebellion and then during the Second World War in the Middle East in North Africa, being killed in action on 22nd November 1941 in Egypt during the operations around the Halfaya Pass.

James Valentine Pelling saw service as a Private (No.6398266) with the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, and was present in Palestine during the Arab Rebellion and then during the Second World War in the Middle East in North Africa, being killed in action on 22nd November 1941, and buried in Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery in Egypt, which is adjacent to Halfaya Pass, some 12km from the border with Libya. Aged 26 at the time of his death, he was the son of James Edward and Margaret Alice Pelling, of Steyning, Sussex, where he was born, and husband of J.E. Pelling. GVF
