Ernest David Coleman was born in Feltwell, Norfolk, and was working as a horseman when he enlisted into the British Army at Thetford on 28th February 1923, joining as a Gunner (No.1424915) the Royal Artillery. By the time of the Second World War he was a Warrant Officer 3rd Class and in receipt of the Regular Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and he then went on to be promoted to Warrant Officer 1st Class and to be awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal.
