Russia – Soviet: A Liberation of Nikolayev award of the Medal for Courage awarded to Guards Private Sergei Vasilyevich Matveichev, a machine-gunner in the 117th Guards Rifle Regiment, 39th Guards Division. Later serving with the 36th Guards Mortar Brigade, he was awarded another Medal for Courage on 4th June 1945.

Guards Private Sergei Vasilyevich Matveichev was born in Ilyinskoye Raion, Ivanovo Oblast in 1917. He joined the Red Army in 1941. By March 1944 he was serving as a machine-gunner in the 117th Guards Rifle Regiment, 39th Guards Rifle Division. His award of this Medal for Courage was made by Order of the 117th Guards Rifle Division on 30th March 1944, the recommendation being as follows:
‘Guards Private Sergei Vasilyevich Matveyechev, machine gunner in the 1st Battalion, for the fact that he, during the fighting for the village of Nikolayevka on 4th March 1944, killed 6 soldiers and took 1 prisoner. Born in 1917; not a party member; Russian; inducted into the Red Army by the Military Commissariat of the Khimki Raion, Moscow Oblast.’
He was later awarded another Medal for Courage on 4th June 1945 by Order of the 36th Guards Mortar Brigade. After the war he was living in the village of Ilyinskoye, Ilyinskoye Raion, Ivanovo Oblast, and working as a Driver at Gari Machine and Tractor Station, Ilyinskoye Raion, Ivanovo Oblast.
