Senior Seaman Safron Mikhailovich Kondratyev was born in 1912, and having worked pre-war as a Kolkhoz Farmer joined the Red Navy in 1942. Serving with the rank of Senior Seaman as a Senior engineman aboard Ferry nr. 57/311, Landing Craft Squadron, Skerry Ship Brigade, Red Banner Baltic Fleet he had seen service during the Defence of Leningrad before being awarded this Order of the Patriotic War 2ndClass on 10thJanuary 1945 by Order of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet on the back of the following citation:
‘Comrade Kondratyev is an excellent seaman who possesses a thorough understanding of his specialty. While transporting cargo and troops to Tukhoa Island, the engine worked smoothly with no breakdowns occurring through fault of the engineman. While the boat was moving the exhaust manifold’s cooling system was punctured, which threatened to cause delays and downtime. Comrade Kondratyev then connected in directly with the water supply and was able to the ferry back in operation, thanks to his fine knowledge of the engine block. When the fuel pipe feeding the propulsion engine burst, Kondratyev discarded it and connected the engine to the fuel tank by way of a rubber tube.
In recognition of his skill the detachment commander expressed his gratitude to comrade Kondratyev.
Comrade Kondratyev deserves the Order of the Patriotic War 2ndClass.
Signed by the Commander of the 5thDetachment, Landing Craft Squadron, Skerry Ship Brigade, Red Banner Baltic Fleet.
He would later go on to be awarded a Medal of Ushakov on 11thDecember 1945. It is unknown whether he continued to serve after the war.
