William Jarman was born on 13th December 1907 in Machynlleth, Powys, Wales, and originally enlisted into the Territorial Army on 21st November 1929, joining as a Private (No.4190034) the 7th (Merioneth & Montgomery) Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He subsequently transferred to the Pioneer Corps on 23rd April 1944, and saw service in North West Europe.
