      A Civil British Empire Medal group awarded to Ralph William Hooker, Acting Inspector of Rigging at HM Dockyard, Sheerness who had seen service with the Royal Navy during the Great War before being invalided in 1919. He would take up employment with the Admiralty and would be awarded the British Empire Medal in the London Gazette of 4th January 1944 for his work in organising and carrying out important mooring work with unfailing loyalty in various areas from Dover to Scarpa and also in difficult conditions in Iceland from May to November 1941. British Empire Medal (Civil Division) GVI (RALPH WILLIAM HOOKER) 1914-15 Star (J.3821. R.W. HOOKER A,B., R.N.) British War Medal (J.3821. R.W. HOOKER. L.S. R.N.) Victory Medal (J.3821. R.W. HOOKER. L.S. R.N.) - in a recessed wooden presentation frame. Ralph William Hooker was born in Eastchurch, Isle of Sheppy in Kent on 26 January 1893. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy on 21 February 1909 and served aboard HMS Beagle, Pembroke and Havelock during WWI. He was invalided out of the service on 9 September 1919. Taking up employment with the Admiralty he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the London Gazette of 4.1.1944 whilst employed as an Acting Inspector of Rigging at HM Dockyard in Sheerness. The citation for the BEM read thus: "Mr Hooker has shown great zeal and ability in organising and carrying out important mooring work with unfailing loyalty and cheerfulness in various areas from Dover to Scarpa, and also under most difficult conditions in Iceland from May to November 1941." The 1939 Register has him living at 48 Kingshead Street, Harwick where he is described as a Chargeman of Riggers at His Majesty's Dockyard. He passed away in Kent on 10 October 1949.
