A Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire group awarded to Lieutenant Commander S.G. Gorton, Royal Navy who was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the London Gazette of 1st November 1918 for his work in laying cables in Russian waters. Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Military) British War Medal (LIEUT. S.G. GORTON. R.N.R.) Victory Medal (LIEUT. S.G. GORTON. R.N.R.) Defence Medal War Medal 1939-45, the last two unnamed as issued. Lieutenant Commander Sandford George Gorton, Royal Navy was born in Clapham on 9th October 1883. During eh Great War he was Officer in Command of H.M.S. Monarch a cable laying ship seconded from the General Post Office. He was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire on 1st January 1918 for his service laying cables in Russian Waters. During the Second World War he served in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Division. Also awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal for WWI - sent to him in 1925. This medal is not with the group. Passed away 6 December 1958 at St Lawrence, Jersey, Channel Islands. Sold with a file of comprehensive research which confirms the recipients Second World War entitlement. (5) Good Very Fine
