Ernest Walter Carter was born in the parish of St. Lukes, Southampton and attested at Chatham on 20th September 1895, initially serving at home before travelling to South Africa on 19th August 1901 where he would take part in the Boer War being present in operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. He would return home on 4th April 1904, before later serving in Gibraltar from 24th September 1907 until 20th March 1912. He would then serve at home until his discharge on 24th February 1920, being awarded his Army Loong Service and Good Conduct Medal in Army Order 99 of April 1914.
