Mercantile Marine War Medal awarded to Reginald A.E. Lofthouse who was serving aboard S.S. Glenogle when that vessel was sunk by the German submarine U-24 on 27th March 1917, subsequently being admitted to hospital with frostbitten feet and hands. He would survive the war only to die of a stroke in 1922.

Reginald Arthur Eric Lofthouse was serving aboard SS Glenogle when she was sunk by the German submarine U-24 on 27th March 1917, whilst the crew was saved Quartermaster Lofthouse was admitted to hospital with frostbitten feet and hands. Surviving the war, he would later sadly die of a stroke in 1922 in Wellington Hospital whilst serving aboard SS Zealandic.
