Russia – Soviet: Battle of Staraya Russa Medal for Bravery awarded to Private Yakov Yudevich Zlotokrylov, 122nd Rifle Regiment, 201st Rifle Division for serious wounds to the stomach and liver caused by shell fragments in August 1942.

Yakov Yudevich Zlotokrylov was born in Silajani Parish, Rezekne County, Latvia in 1916. A Jewish ‘National’ he joined the Red Army in August 1941 and saw service as a Rifleman in the 122nd Rifle Regiment, 201st Rifle Division with whom he served on the Northwestern Front from August 1941 until March 1943.
He suffered a severe wound of the abdominal cavity with rupture of the stomach and liver in August 1942.
This award of the Medal for Bravery was issued by decree of the Supreme Soviet on 30th May 1951 as a result of the following recommendation:
‘Private Zlotokrylov Ya. Yu, was a participant of the Patriotic War from 8.1941 until 3.1943. He was registered out of Hospital 3469. Kirov District Military Commissarriat, city of Korov.
During the offensive on the village of Tugalovo and Staraya Russa, on the axis of the Northwestern Front in August 1942 he was severely wounded by shell fragments in the abdominal cavity, with rupture of stomach and liver. The wound is confirmed by a certificate from Hospital 3469.
At present, he is an invalid of the Patriotic War and a pensioner of the 3rd group. He works as a store clerk in the Workers’ Supply Department of the Albaris Factory. He has been evaluated positively. He deserves awarding of the Government award the Order of the Red Star.’
He would also later receive the Medal for Victory over Germany.
At the time of the issuing of the award he was working as a Store Manager – Artel ‘Sadorbiba’ at Suvorov Street in Riga.
