Birkhead, Royal Artillery who was taken Prisoner of War at the fall of Timor on 23rd February 1942. 1939-1945 Star Pacific Star War Medal Efficiency Medal, GVIR 1st type bust, with Territorial Suspender (1481021 SGT. R.W. BIRKHEAD. R.A.) Richard Walter Birkhead from Walton on Thames, Surrey was born 24-2-1917 & enlisted 1-9-39.He was serving with the 21st L.A.A Royal Artillery in Timor in the Dutch east indies when he was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Timor 23-2-1942. The Japanese invaded Timor 19-2-42 & it fell 23-2-42. He was held at Ambon camp & at Fukuoka 1b prior to his release 14-9-1945. He remained in the Territorial army & took his discharge from the R.E.M.E in 1953. He applied for the issue of his medals in 1992 age 75 & as such the WW2 campaign stars have the later bigger suspension rings which are correct for that period.
