Harper, 1st/6th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action on 15th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme when his Battalion was attacked by German flamethrowers, he is now buried at Blighty Valley Cemetery. The brother Serjeant W.E. Harper, Army Service Corps would be Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette of 25th May 1918 and the Meritorious Service Medal for service in France in the London Gazette of 18th January 1919. Private, later Second Lieutenant C.R. Harper, 1/6th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. 1914-1915 Star (2547 PTE. C. HARPER. W. YORK.R.) British War Medal and Victory Medal (2-LIEUT. C.R. HARPER.) Clarence Ruel Harper first landed in France on 15TH April 1915 serving with the 6th Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment. He was commissioned into his own battalion on 11th October 1915 and was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders on 15th July 1916 when the battalion was attacked for the very first time by German flame throwers. He was 24 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Blighty valley cemetery at Authullie Wood. Serjeant W.E. Harper, Army Service Corps. He was mentioned in despatches for services in France by sir Douglas Haigh in the London gazette on 25th May 1918 and went on to be awarded the MSM also for services in France in the London Gazette on 18th January 1919. 18-1-1919.
